Men’s Summer Style 2018. So the summer is here and if you are anything like me you want to look good out and about but at the same time ‘trend’ type fashion does nothing for you! If that’s the case and you are looking for a steer on your style then our guide is designed for you.
In this article, we’ve taken a look at some of the worlds top Extreme Sports stars and their summer styles. We’ve then taken a few good examples and aim to show you how to recreate their look. So you can look good around the people who actually matter!
Also, and this is a personal one, this isn’t a guide for teenagers (Well it is but . . . ) if you are into extreme sports no matter what your age, wear the uniform, express yourself, and don’t let all those ‘normals’ tell you what to wear. They will make you old and you are only old when you can’t ride anymore!
So, here goes, in no particular order, we have picked some of the top current riders, people like Paul Rodriguez, Rodrigo Koxa, and Nabil Slimani but also some of the old school masters like Travis Rice, Garrett Macnamara and Ken Block. What we aim to show you is that as well as having some cool looks it’s often not so much what you wear as how you wear it which is important.
Paul Rodriguez – 4 x X Games Gold Medal Winning Street Skateboarder
Paul Rodriguez, also known as “P-Rod” first came to everyone’s attention at the age of 14, only two years after he started skating. His consistency and effortless style led Paul to travel far from his hometown of Northridge, CA to the City Streets around the world as part of the legendary City Stars team. His passion for skating and filming with his friends led to his breakout part in Logic 6 in 2000, Street Cinema in 2001 and landed him Rookie of the Year in 2002 for his part in Transworld’s video production “In Bloom.” He turned pro later that year.
P-Rod was one of the original riders form the Nike SB team roster, and later, Paul was the first skateboarder to be endorsed as an official Nike Athlete. In 2004, he won his first of 4 Gold Medals in the X Games. His favourite things to skate are ledges, rails, and stairs.
If you would like to get to know him a little better then check out the video.
Recreating Paul’s Look
Cap – Paul tends to wear a more relaxed fit cap than a lot of the other riders we will be featuring. 47 Brand would call it their clean-up style New Era would call it an A-frame, other brands have plenty of other names! A more traditional, low construction often with a curved peak. Here are a few examples:
Long Sleeve Tee – Paul likes a long sleeve top, although in the shot above it’s a winter top, since it’s summer we will give a few lighter tops as an example. Here are a few examples:
Jeans – Paul tends to wear a looser fit jean, it is chance to be a comfort thing and possibly helps with his smooth flowy style. Something like this would be perfect:
Skate Shoes – Although Paul is a Nike SB rider he wears a very ‘traditional’ style skate shoe. The two main features of these are a hardwearing sole and a padded collar and tongue. Here are a few examples:
Rodrigo Koxa – World Record Holder for the Biggest Wave Ever Ridden
Rodrigo ‘Koxa’ Augusto do Espírito Santo born in Jundiaí, Brazil, on September 22, 1979, and began his surfing career in 1988 surfing on the beaches of Guarujá, Brazil.
In April 30th 2018, the Brazilian surfer won the coveted prize Quiksilver XXL Biggest Wave, in the Big Wave Awards, of World Surf League (WSL) and also had his wave officialized by judges of the Big Wave Awards, based in Santa Monica, CA, as the biggest wave ever surfed in history. He now holds the position in the Guinness World Records with the biggest wave ever surfed in the history of the World Surf League.
The wave was surfed by Koxa on November 8th 2017, in the village of Nazaré, city of Leiria, in Portugal. The feat was declared as the new world record whose wave was about 80 feet, the equivalent of 24.4 meters. The mark surpassed the previous record, estimated at 78 feet, reached by the surfer Garrett McNamara (See below), also a mentor of the Brazilian surfer.
If you would like to see the world record run, check out the video.
Recreating Rodrigo’s Look
Rodrigo is all about the traditional ‘surf’ look. Essentially living in t-shirts, board shorts and flip-flops. It’s a very easy look to recreate and means you have a million options.
T-Shirt – Simple, yet fun surf t-shirts tend to be pretty simple in colour with some interesting graphic work on the front. If you are going to go wild with your boardies then a simple look with a simple graphic works best. Check out the examples below:
Board Shorts – Boardies are the ultimate expression of surfer style, worn a little longer than most shorts are now, generally with a bootlace front and as bright as possible. If you follow these steps you can’t go wrong. Check out some options below:
Flip-Flops – What can you say about flip-flops that you don’t already know? Well, to be honest, quite a lot. There are millions of different types of flip-flop for every need. In the image above they seem to be wearing a nice and simple design with rubber toe thongs. These tend to be quick drying and grippy with wet feet, an essential if you are in and out of the water (Or pool) all day. Here are a few options below:
Nabil Slimani –
Nabil Slimani, a professional skateboarder for more than 10 years is from a small village named Thônes.
Supported by many sponsors Nabil has the chance to travel the globe to satisfy his
A few years back, Nabil was the one to watch: even Jamie Thomas took note. Then life’s vagaries meant things didn’t roll the way they might have. Today, Nabil’s back on the radar. New sponsors, a new city, new motivation. This time it’s on for Nabil, and on for good. As a Vans skater, his clothing and footwear are second to none!
Recreating Nabil’s Look
Nabil is one of Europe’s new wave of skate sensations. His style also reflects a modern skate look. A little more fitted than in the past but still worn with function in mind.
Cap – Nabil seems to wear a more structured, flat peak, cap. A generally more modern style. However, it seems that a few styles are in at the moment and it’s more about what works for you. A few examples of structured style caps are below:
T-Shirt – It’s pretty simple, something long and loose is the order of the day. Wear whatever you want, if you want to go bright, go bright if you like something more subdued then go for it. Some examples below:
Jeans – As opposed to old school type riders, the new riders coming through tend to wear a more fitted jean. This could just be a fashion or could be down to better materials (elasticated denim etc). Hever, there is definitely a distinct difference in fit:
Socks – Well, I don’t know what socks he wears but we have some really cool ones so I thought I’d put some examples up.
Skate Shoes – Nabil tends to wear a lighter weight skate shoe, maybe he hasn’t had the foot and ankle injuries yet! A lighter shoe will give you more freedom to move and more feel on the board. Some examples below:
Travis Rice – 30 time Grand Slam Title Winner
Recreating Travis’ Look
Cap – Travis loves the structured look flat peak cap and also seems to like a floral peak! So with that in mind here are a few examples:
T-Shirt – As long as the brand is right you can go with anything and Travis certainly does. With snowboarding style, you are also lucky enough to be able to delve into skate and surf brands as well, so take a pick, it’s genuinely up to you!
Underwear – Again, no idea what undies he wears but we thought we’d show you some cool options anyway! Check them out below:
Jeans – Travis is a little old school so likes a baggier jean. It’s also probably a function of wearing big snow pants, more room just get’s more comfortable. The Quiksilver Revolver Jeans (Below) have that loose fit:
Socks – Once again I’m just guessing here but you can pretty much guarantee he will be wearing a top quality snow sock. We have some awesome versions from Stance so we thought we would show them off! Check them out below:
Shoes – Spending a lot of time in the snow he tends to wear a skate style shoe, but with a twist which makes it suitable for wearing in colder climates but also have water resistant or waterproof properties. Check out these examples:
Ken Block – King of the Hoonigans!
Ken Block (born November 21, 1967) is a professional rally driver with the Hoonigan Racing Division, formerly known as the Monster World Rally Team. Block is also one of the co-founders of DC Shoes. Block has also competed in many action sports events including skateboarding, snowboarding, and motocross. Since selling his ownership of DC Shoes, Block has shifted his business focus to Hoonigan Industries, an apparel brand for auto enthusiasts. He is currently the co-owner and Head Hoonigan In Charge (HHIC) at the company.
Ken is here purely because he’s a cultural Icon and being one of the founders of DC shoes he founded one of my favourite brands!
Recreating Ken’s Look
So we know he now own’s Hoonigan but the look he has on the photo above is very easily replicated, especially using DC stuff.
Caps– Again it’s another one for the structured look. Some more examples below:
T-Shirts – It’s really easy to replicate Ken’s T-Shirt look, just make sure your shirt has a big logo on the front! Oh, and is preferably black. Simple!
Jeans – Same as above, he’s a bit old school so a looser fit is what he goes for.
Shoes – While he is primarily known for his DC ranges of skate shoes, in the photo above he’s wearing a cool pair of high tops. So we’ll add some of them into the mix and give you some examples below:
