Decay – A Freestyle Skateboarding Movie

After my column the other month regarding freestyle skateboarding I’ve been hard at work collecting footage for my latest venture ‘Decay’.

The whole ‘Decay’ thing was an interesting concept for me. I love the whole ‘rough and knackered’ spots I used to skate as a kid. Not the best ground, not the smooth skateparks but sheltered, wrecked spots you used to hang out at for hours on end with your mates after school. Time goes on though, your body ages, things aren’t as easy as they used to be. But the love of skating still shines on for me and makes me push harder and drive myself further than I ever did as a kid.

I’ve been wanting to make a proper video part like the good old days. One which stuck in my head was the Mark Appleyards section in ‘Sorry’ as it introduced me to the band Placebo, which I had to pay homage to in the soundtrack to this video.

The skating was good fun though. Possibly the most difficult thing was the rotation clip at the end, timing it between pedestrians, my own idiotic feet which seem to have a mind of their own and chewing gum getting stuck in my bearings. Lush.

Finding the right spots such as the banked tunnel, the white underpass and the floodlit wall were all within walking distance of each other, yet not visible from the road in Cramlington, I stumbled upon them by chance but they work well. Its been a learning curve creating this as I’m new to the whole ‘cinematography’ thing but I’m pleased how it turned out.

Let me know what you think in the comments below or pop me a message on Instagram, I’d love to hear from you.
