Thanks for coming to our blog. My name’s Sarah and as the new marketing assistant at Urban Surfer I’ve been really looking forward to getting on with some blogging. As it’s my first blog Ian has basically let me write about whatever I want! So I thought I might as well write about a brand I love (not Disney, unfortunately. that’s not really relevant.) so I chose DC Shoes!
In case you don’t know, DC Shoes are a massive global company which sell lifestyle apparel as well as skate, snow and surf gear. DC Shoes are a brand I’ve been wearing since my emo/scene kid phase which started when I was 12. I would insert a photo of me wearing them back in ‘08 but I’ve happily destroyed all evidence of how ridiculous I looked back then. I am glad they’re still around though, ‘cause not only do they have a nostalgic place in my heart, they’re also very comfortable.
DC Shoes a History
DC Shoes were founded in California in 1994 by Damon Way and Ken Block. They were actually originally called Droors Clothing which quickly became DC Shoes. Personally I think this was a good choice, “droors” sounds a bit…odd. By 2003, less than 10 years later, their revenue had reached $100 MILLION a year!
In 2004 DC Shoes was sold to Quicksilver, where they moved into their office in Huntington Beach.
DC has gone on to sell more than just shoes. They currently make shoes, shirts, hoodies, coats, pants, boots, hats and bags for men, women and children. This large product range as well as the quality of their products is what has lead them to be one of the biggest action sports apparel company in the world. They even became the first action sports brand to get 10 million likes on Facebook.
In 2005 Ken Block went on to start is career as a rally car driver, which he continues to do to this day. Block also went on to start a new company Hoonigan Industries which is “an apparel brand for auto enthusiasts”.
Damon Way also started a new clothing company (FACT) in 2016.
DC Shoes Teams
Large clothing brands associated with sports, such as Vans, Nike and Etnies, often have their own professional teams. DC Shoes currently have skate and snow teams. They reportedly also had a surf team, however this isn’t listed on their website so i’m not sure if it still exists.
Their current skate team consists of Danny Way, Josh Kalis, Colin McKay, Brian Wenning, Wes Kramer, Evan Smith, Tiago Lemos, Carlos Iqui, Matt Miller, Tommy Flynn, Cyril Jackson, Madars Apse, Thaynan Costa, Tristan Funkhouser, Chase Webb, Alexis Ramirez, John Shanahan & John Gardner.
Danny Way is a professional skateboarder, company owner and rally-cross driver. He was a founding member of the DC skate team in 1994. He was awarded Thrasher magazine’s “Skater of the Year” award twice. He is known for extreme stunts, such as jumping into a skateboard ramp from a helicopter, and pioneering megaramps, including one that he used to jump the Great Wall of China on a skateboard. In 1997 he gained the world record for “Biggest Air” with a 12 foot (3.7 m) kickflip, he went on to beat this record in 2003. He also gained the world record for “Long Distance Jump” three separate times.
Josh Kalis specializes in street skateboarding. He joined the DC skate team in 1997. In 2010 Kalis was releaved to be a character in the EA game Skate 3. In 2015 DC celebrated Kalis’ 10th signature shoe.
Colin McKay joined the team back in 1993. He was a member of the skate team Plan B along with Danny Way. During a tour of Australia, McKay performed a trick known as a “backside tailslide” at the Pizzey skate park in the state of Queensland. Professional skateboarder John Cardiel said in an interview with Australian magazine SLAM, “That was the sickest thing I had ever seen at Pizzey”.
Check out this video of one of their skate team – Matt Miller.
Their current snow team consists of Torstein Hogmo, Mons Roisland, Travis Rice, Sebbe DeBuck, Jordan Morse, Devun Walsh, Brady Lem, Iikka Backstrom, Justin Fronius, Anto Chamberland, Marc Salasmanosa, Jonathan Lindhe.
Travis Rice is an American professional snowboarder. He is #13 on Snowboarder magazine’s list of the 20 most influential snowboarders of the last 20 years. One of Rice’s most notable moments was when at Snowboarder magazine’s Superpark contest at Mammoth Mountain he launched a ‘mammoth’ of a backside rodeo across a 117-foot gap jump. In 2013, Rice was named the best contemporary snowboarder in the world by Red Bull. Rice: “I’ve shredded for DC for as long as I can remember – always doing this thing with a sarcastic level of seriousness!”.
Torstein Horgmo is a Norwegian professional snowboarder. Horgmo has competed, and medalled in, a variety of slopestyle and big air snowboarding competitions. He was the first to land a triple cork (three off axis flips and four full rotations before coming back in contact with the ground) off a 100 ft jump. Horgmo has won 3 golds and 3 silvers at the Winter X Games. In 2014 he qualified for the winter olympics but unfortunately had to miss it due to breaking his clavicle.
