10 Great Beach Games for Adults, Kids or Big Kids!

“The sun is shining, the weather is sweet, makes you want to move your dancing feet” – Bob Marley. What the sun doesn’t do is make me want to sit doing nothing all day even if I’m lucky enough to be on a stunning beach without a cloud in the sky! ’10 Great beach games’ is designed for people like me who love the beach but hate sitting around.

If you are anything like me then it doesn’t matter how beautiful the beach is you have to be doing something, and reading just doesn’t cut it when you are outdoors with all that nature around you. Therefore we at Urban Surfer have created the ’10 Great Beach Games’ for anyone like me who loves the beach but wants some fun things to do to make the day pass.

Now don’t get me wrong, my 1st advice would always be to get out in the water and do some watersports (Keep an eye out for my next blog for that!) but if you are with family or friends who aren’t into the same things then it might be better to pack away the surfboard and go armed with a few different games which don’t need much kit and even less skill!

So, without further ado here is our top 10 great beach games for adults, kids and big kids!

Beach Frisbee Golf

Now frisbee on its own is cool. Especially if you are standing waist deep in water. However, if you are just standing on the beach it can get a little samey, so why not play frisbee golf? Set up targets using items you brought to the beach or dig a hole. Take turns trying to throw your frisbee as close to the target as you can. Lowest number of throws wins. You can also change up your targets as you get your eye in.

Kit You need: A frisbee, did you guess that before I said it?

Limbo at the Beach

Get the reggae on and limbo! With two people holding the ends of anything you have to hand which can be ‘limbo’d’ (Is that a word?) under, have each person take a turn trying to go under the “bar” with their backs facing the sand. After everyone has succeeded at a certain height of the bar, lower it again and again. While I’ve seen articles which say you can play without music for us it’s an essential! We would recommend a bit of reggae, roots or dancehall but whatever gets you moving will do.

Kit You need: an item to use as a bar and music (Not-optional).

Picasso in the Sand

Using a stick, hands, shovels, or rocks, draw a picture, in the sand. Or use things collected on the beach to make a drawing.

Kit You need: A creative mind.

Beach Darts

Draw a dart board on the sand with points for each ring. Instead of darts, use shells or small beach rocks. Toss your “dart” and add up points to see who wins.

Kit You need: Stuff off the beach.

Beach Ball Balancing Act

This beach ball game is fun for big groups and is easy to play. You need one inflatable beach ball for every team of two players or one beachball and a stopwatch. The players try to carry the ball across a finish line without using their hands. The ball can be balanced between their heads, pressed between their backs while walking backwards or set between their stomachs and crab-walked to the end.

Kit You need: Beach balls.

Kick the Can

This game is a variation of tag and hide & seek. One person is designated as “it” and a can is placed in the middle of the playing area. The other people run off and hide while the “it” covers his or her eyes and counts to 10. “It” then tries to tag everyone. If a person is tagged by “it”, they go into a holding pen for captured players. If one of the un-captured players manages to kick the can, the captured players are released. The game is over once all the non-“it” players are in the holding pen.

Number of Players: Ideally at least three.

Kit You need: A metal can (Remember to take it home with you!)

This outdoor game is a lot of fun. Every player gets a number and crowds around the person who is “it” for that round. “It” then tosses the ball straight up and the other players run away. As the ball reaches the top of its toss, “it” calls out the number of one of the other players and then runs away also. The player whose number was called must run back and catch the ball (or chase after it if it is bouncing around). Once that person has the ball, they yell, “Spud!” Then everyone else must freeze. The person with the ball must try to hit one of the players with the ball. If they do, that new person gets a letter (first S, then P, then U, then D) and is now “it.” If they miss, the person who threw the ball is “it” for the next round.
Number of Players: A small group.

Kit You need: Playground ball.

Boules is a great and simple game to play. It’s one of those which makes you forget the time. A “jack” or target is thrown on the sand. Players then throw their weighted balls and the one who gets their ball closest to the target wins a point. The game continues until a certain number of points are reached. If you don’t own a boule set, improvise with rocks. Just always make sure no one is walking by when it’s your turn to throw!

Kit You need: A boules set or rocks.

Beach Cricket

You should love cricket. No excuses, if you don’t then please seek some medical advice! If you don’t want to go that far then I’ll explain; what other sport can you play where most of your time is spent standing and relaxing in the beautiful sunshine with the odd runaround, not too much though, but just enough to make you feel like you have done something. See, I told you so!

All you need for a good game of beach cricket is a cheap kit you can buy at almost any beach in the UK and remember, 6 balls in an over and to help keep those county-level batsmen at bay play 1 hand (catch) 1 bounce and you are out.

Beach Football

Take a ball, a couple of jumpers or sticks as goal posts and, well, you know the rest!

So there you go. Don’t take going to the beach lying down, get up and get playing! The beach is one of the few places you can really express yourself in public so just go for it.

If you have any other beach game suggestions please don’t hesitate to comment below. We are always looking for new fun games to play.
