Tony Hawk – the most influental skateboarder of all time

Tony Hawk definitively is the most influential skater of all time. His full name is Anthony Frank Hawk. With the nickname “The Birdman”, he is one of the most successful skaters and one of the people who made the best business in the world. Tony Hawk is the owner of the skateboarding company “The Birdhouse”. He is born in 1968, and at the age of 49, just like Bob Burnquist, he says he will never retire from the world of skateboarding.

He is also known for the “Boom Boom HuckJam”, an extreme sports exhibition which takes place in Las Vegas in 2002. Tony Hawk appeared in many movies, videos and TV shows.

Tony Hawk is known as “the king of vertical skateboarding”.

Tony Hawk – early life and interest in skating

Tony grew up in San Diego, California. As a child, he was extremely hyperactive but sports activities were not the good area for him. He didn’t like baseball and many other sports. His parents were surprised when they found his IQ is 144 – Tony Hawk was a gifted kid. Since his parents didn’t know to deal with his excessive energy, they had no choice but to support his skateboarding dreams. As his skills developed, he became professional skateboarder at the age of 14. He was a champion for twelve consecutive years and there are very small chances anyone will ever be able to change this record.

 

Tony Hawk – impressive skateboarding career and influence

Tony Hawk started with competitions in 1983, when he was only 14 years old. This is one of the earliest appearances in any skateboarding event. Tony was an undefeated champion from 1983 to 1995, and that is the record nobody was ever able to crush. Tony is also the first skateboarder who was able to land a 900. Even at the age of 48, Tony is still a world class skater who can perform excellent tricks and who doesn’t afraid of falling. He said this was his final 900, the trick which raised him so high.

Tony Hawk is the winner of many competitions and the number of silver and bronze medals is also huge. This is a type of a skateboarder who gave his life to skateboarding. It’s not only about the competitions, but the promotions of the sport and many new competitions and skateboard parks this world-class skater created.

Tony Hawk’s famous discipline is the vert, where he won the biggest number of medals. He is also very successful in pool, mini-ramp, and street. When appearing in 1983, Tony looked like one more kid who will stay active for 2-3 years, give up and follow some other routines in his life. But his persistence and dedication left him on the top for a very long period of time.

Tony Hawk won 63 competitions – that is the result which will hardly ever be beaten.

His golden age started in the year 1983 when he won two pool competitions as a child of 15. During the year 1984 Tony Hawk won four competitions, as a teenager of 16! His golden age continued during the years 1985 and 1986 when he won 5 competitions per year. As a teenager, Tony won in 12 competitions!

He continued his winning streak – three competitions in 1987, four in 1988 (mini ramp event for the first time), four in 1989 (a street event for the first time), four in 1990. The most successful year in the career of Tony Hawk was 1991. He won seven competitions. And for the first time, Tony won the event which was held outside of the USA – one event in Germany and one event in France.

During the year 1992, Tony won five competitions, but “only” 2 during 1993. However, in 1993 Tony won the World Championship, which was the most important competition then.

In 1995, he won two competitions, and also one of them was the World Championships. He was a world number 1 for a very long period of time. In 1996 he was a winner on one competition.

In 1997, Tony Hawk started competing in doubles, where he shew a lot of success with Andy McDonald and Brian Howard. He won the World Cup and the World Championships in 1998 – two most important competitions.

The last golden year for Tony Hawk was 1999 when he won impressive five competitions. He won two titles for best trick during the year 1999.

Tony Hawk’s last victory occurred in the year 2002 when he was a champion in doubles on a vert ride with Andy McDonald. As soon as Tony Hawk dedicated more to promotions and started appearing fewer in competitions, started the golden age of Bob Burnquist.

 

His biggest influence among the youth is the video game“Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Series”. Appearing for the first time in 1999, the game had extremely big successes. Tony is available as a character in part 5, where he appears as a teacher for “360 Varial Heelflip Lien” move. The video game is available for PC, Sony Playstation, and many other consoles. Till now, five parts of this game is published. Bob Burnquist is the only character who appears in all five parts, with the restriction in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 (he should appear, but he appeared in another video game, ESPN X Games Skateboarding, which resulted in a prohibition).

Tony Hawk is also known for amusement park rides. As a part of skateboarding promotion, Tony opened many amusement parks for extreme sports. A series of amusement park rides was created in 2007 and 2008 and named Six Flags parks. During the year 2010, it was renamed to Pandemonium.

Some magazines write that Tony Hawk is the second most influential skateboarder, after Mark Gonzales. But Tony definitively appeared more on youtube, TV shows, media, movies and everywhere else!

 

Tony Hawk – movies and TV shows

Tony Hawk appeared in many TV shows and movies. He is the skater with the most appearances on TV.

Tony’s movie career started in 1986 when he appeared as a stunt skater in the movie Thrashin’. He made short appearances in the movie “Police Academy 4” in 1987 and “Gleaming the Cube” in 1989, where he appeared as a skateboarder.

Tony Hawk’s movie career started from the year 2002 when he started to appear fewer in competitions. He acted himself for the first time in Australian skateboarding movie – Deck Dogz. Tony appeared in all three seasons of Jackass (2002, 2006, 2010), where he rode the skateboard in a fat suit through an obstacle course.

He also voiced himself in a cartoon named “Tony Hawk in Boom Boom Sabotage”, where he is kidnapped by circus freaks. Tony Hawk appeared in one episode of CSI Miami, where he acted a skateboarder and a game programmer. He acted himself in the movie from 2008, “The suite life of Zack and Cody”.

Tony Hawk is also known for his famous Secret Skatepark Tours, a total of 3. When it comes to the promotion of skateboarding and appearances on TV, hardly there will ever be any skater more active than Tony. He appeared also in four parts of “Birdhouse”.

There are many other movies, TV shows and videos where Tony appeared. The trail of Tony Hawk in skateboarding is undeletable.

He is one of the many famous skaters who was riding down the Bob Burnquist’s famous vert ramp in his yard.

Tony Hawk also launched the Tony Hawk Foundation, which has the main goal is to help to build skateparks. His organization was supported by many celebrities, like Andre Agassi, Muhammad Ali, Alonzo Mourning…

 

Tony Hawk – personal life

Tony Hawk is definitively the most controversial skateboarder when it comes to personal life. He married even four times.

His first marriage lasted three years with Cindy Dunbar. She was his girlfriend from the high school. They got son Ryan, who is also a professional skateboarder, but the couple divorced in 1993. Despite the couple is divorced, Tony is in good relations with his son. He even helped him find sponsors – Lakai Limited Footwear and Baker Skateboards.

Tony Hawk’s second marriage was with Erin Lee in 1996, and they have two sons – Spencer and Keegan. The couple divorced in 2003.

His third marriage was with Lhotse Merriam, whom he met on Fiji islands. He also has a son with her, named Kadence Clover. The couple divorced in 2011.

Tony Hawk married his fourth wife, Kathy Goodman, in 2015 in Ireland.

Tony is a father of four sons from four marriages.

He also says his mission is to promote skateboarding and to develop extreme sports to maximum levels.
