Part 1: For the sun worshippers
Are you more of a snow bunny or a sun worshipper? Are you looking to work on building a snowman this winter or work on your tan? We have a great selection for all of you this winter!
This will be a three-part series with something for everyone: sun worshippers, snow bunnies and some local UK spots! Where will you be travelling this winter?
Florida is a great option during the winter months! There is typically fantastic weather all year long and an endless wealth of opportunities that will tick everyone’s boxes. I spent three years there and cannot recommend it more. I was very surprised by Florida and what it had to offer. So I wanted to share a few of my favourite spots.
Orlando is a family favourite, and home to a whole host of theme parks, ranging from Disney, to Universal to Sea World! In addition to all of the kiddy friendly options in Orlando, throw in some great shopping, great food, and tons of sporting activities to please the whole family. These range from some of the best golf courses, to some of the best wakeboarding locations and coaches the world can offer, American Football, Basketball and even surf within an hour of Orlando! For the nature lovers there are also some amazing state parks near Orlando, if you are lucky you might even spot some manatees!
The home of the infamous South Beach! Miami makes for a great winter escape. Never ending beautiful beaches, beautiful people, great food, great music and great art! There is a lot more to explore in Miami than just the beach! Be sure to go to the Wynwood Art District where you will find vibrant artwork, cool restaurants, breweries, shops, night clubs all set on the backdrop of some amazing graffiti. Wynwood and the Wynwood Walls are probably my favourite places in Miami! Miami is full of fantastic restaurants, be sure to check out some of the great Peruvian and Cuban restaurants, and don’t miss out on the Stone Crab at Joe’s!
180 miles south of Miami you find yourself in the tropical island of Key West. If you choose to drive, there are a number of fantastic places to stop off en route!
Be sure to stop off and feed the tarpon at Robbie’s! They also make really great fish tacos!
For a sunset cocktail with your toes in the sand, go check out Pierre’s Beach Bar. It is a stunning hotel, with a great little restaurant/ bar right on the beach.
Another place I love to stop on the way down to Key West is Bahia Honda State Park. The beach is absolutely stunning, there are plenty of organised activities, and additionally there is an up-close view of the original railroad bridge leading to Key West.
Key West is the southernmost point of the US, and boasts year-round good weather. This quirky yet quaint, beautiful island offers beaches on both the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Be sure to watch the sunset from Mallory Square, and if you are a Hemingway fan, go and check out his house (Look out for the 6 toed cats!!)! Key West also has an extremely vibrant night life, full of fun little bars, cabaret and even drag shows! For a fun local place with great local food, check out Blue Heaven, for those looking for a slightly fancier fix, be sure to go to Latitudes. Latitudes, part of a hotel resort on secluded Sunset Key, offers stunning views of the Gulf of Mexico, complete with swaying palms and tiki torches.
Florida is a bit far away, for those of you looking for a warm winter trip but don’t want to go so far, the Canary Is
lands are a great option! Flights from the UK take around four hours, making Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and La Palma enticing destinations all year round! The Canaries are warm year-round providing an idyllic getaway for British travellers. The islands are unequivocally Spanish, which means great food, a well-maintained culture and great drinks and hotels!
There are plenty of activities on offer in the Canary Islands, and if you want to get away from the beach for a bit there is heaps to explore inland. There are of course lots of water sports, beach activities, fantastic restaurants serving delightful fresh seafood. Tenerife, the island capital, not only has incredible volcanoes to explore but for those night owls out there, it is the party headquarters of the Canary Islands!
A fabulous country for adventuring, rich in history, overflowing with charm and pleasantly warm in winter! Morocco has a lot to offer all year round, from sightseeing, to hiking, water rafting, horse riding through the desert, and even offers fantastic shopping! Morocco even has ski resorts, so if you are finding it difficult to decide on your winter holiday, Morocco can provide a bit of everything!
If you are more of an urbanite, there are plenty of beautiful cities to explore, from beautiful Fez, to artistic Casablanca, to the bustling Marrakesh! If hiking is more your thing, then the Atlas Mountains will be where you will want to spend your holiday! And for the more adventurous types there are plenty of desert adventures to embark on, or even some mountain biking!
A country that boasts warm weather and tropical beaches will always be the ideal winter destination! Costa Rica is lapped by both the Pacific Ocean and the Carribean sea. It has great surf, great food, tropical rainforests and even volcanoes to explore! Additionally, Costa Rica’s high season coincides perfectly with our winter. There are two international airports in Costa Rica which allow for numerous flights daily. Costa Rica has something to offer for everyone, with a never-ending choice of activities, a plethora of wildlife, beautiful beaches, imposing volcanoes, botanical gardens, stunning river valleys and a fantastic local cuisine. Be sure to try out a zipline tour through the rainforest canopy! It is great fun and will give you a hair-raisingly close view of these vast forests.
Costa Rica has set a goal to become the world’s first carbon-neutral country by 2021. To support its green goals as a tourist, stay in a locally owned ecolodges.
